Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 102 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.

NY Times
All CUNY students can get free digital access to the New York Times. Just follow the link on the CUNY Grad Center website and then follow the directions.
My Professor in HE-201 had us read NY Times articles and gave us quizzes every week based off of those articles, which was interesting to me. Not in the aspect of the quizzes or articles that we read but how my class reacted to it. I simply used the phone application that allowed me to get to the articles to read them before the day of the quiz but one of my classmates would print out the articles and highlight/annotate. It was just an interesting experiences. If anyone is wondering, my professor was Edward Diller.
I believe that obtaining the NY Times is a great source for all students to utilize. In today's society, the world is so addicted to Social Media. Which is a major disconnect from the real world. There are events occurring that society should be aware of. It is a great resource that can help society become more educated. For instance when an election is coming up, you by reading the newspaper can see who you like to be elected. Instead on voting based off of nothing, you could have a background of what the person who is running for election believes in and then base your vote on what you agree with. Reading the NY Times can help the world become more educated.
I think getting into a habit of reading news articles can provide a sense of educational value. News articles provide general information. They are a source of entertainment and allow us to find out things about other countries. Through a newspaper, you can get a clear understanding of what is happening in our country and the world. It can also assist students in their learning process and widen their scope of knowledge. Although it may be a challenge to try and read it everyday, in the end its something that will have a positive impact on you
