    • These are, according to Gioia and Lehman the "best" poems of 2018. Can you generalize about what it takes to write a "best" poem? What did you learn about poetry over the last few weeks? How did these readings confirm, or challenge, your previous feelings about poetry? I learnt that poems are difficult extremely and it takes a open mind and a dictionary to understand what its saying most of the times. I believe it doesn't take much to write a "best poem". It was a challenge to read most of these poems it was very hard.
    • Which poem was your favorite? My favorite poem was love poem: chimera
    • Which poem did you struggle w/ the most ? I struggled until we had an open discussion to hear others view on the poem yonder, a rental
    • Kay Ryan's poem, "Some Transcendent Addiction to the Useless" quotes from critic George Steiner's The Poetry of Thought in her title. It's my understanding that Steiner argues that truly great art is bound up with "useless" skills (like writing poetry). This brings us back to our discussion on the first day:
    • How useful is it to read poetry? It is very useful so you would be able to understand what others are saying
    • To write it? So you your self can let others know your thoughts
    • Why are you required to do it in 102? To get us ready to deal with real life people
    • Are you glad that you had to read a book of poetry? Not at all
    • Or was it annoying? no I wasn't
    • Or both?
    • What questions do you still have about poetry, or about any of the poems in the anthology?  I really don't have a question

  1. Your first comment interests me, Marckida. It sounds like it's difficult for you to read poetry, but you don't think it's difficult to write it. Can you be more specific about this?

    1. I don't think it's difficult to write because I'm the one writing I know exactly what I mean, I know exactly what I'm saying ....... that doesn't mean someone else will ...... it's a lot more easier for me to understand myself compare to understanding someone else it takes a litttle time for me which made some poems difficult to understand but while discussing some of these poems it made it a lot more clear hearing other people thoughts and ideas

  2. i think that the poem i struggled with the most was the first poem that we read in class called "Tilia Cordata". Personally, for me it is a bit challenging to understand poetry. I had to read them poem over and over about three times to get a general concept about what the author was trying to portray. i find that the mire you read something confusing the more sense it starts to make. The first time i was completely lost but, by the thrd time a lot of things made sense.

  3. i would agree with the statement made by Gioia saying that these are the best poems of 2018. While each poet is unique in their own way and they all had different ways of portraying what they wanted to get across they also used similar techniques. a lot of the poets used rhyming (aba, bcb, cbc) in their poems which made it all the more difficult to compose. when i had to write the poem in class i was able to realize that poetry is a lot more complex than i thought. Writing a poem can take days, even weeks to complete. i often came to realize that these poets often times hide deeper meanings behind what they write, you can notice this if you read close enough.
