Blindness and Apocalypse

As you read Blindness, I'd like you to make connections to other post-apocalyptic films, TV shows, novels, comic books, myths, video games etc. What is your favorite posts-apocalyptic story? Or, if you've never seen one or never seen one you liked, why not? Why do you thinks these stories have been with us for thousands of years? What do they speak to? (Feel free to use the link/image/video buttons above to link to internet images and/or video.)

Here's a clip from one of my favorite post-apocalyptic films, George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978):

As you continue to read the novel, what do you imagine will happen? What have you been surprised by? What questions do you have?

  1. As I read Blindness, I've noticed similarities with a show I've recently finished watching called "Black Lightning." In the show, children from 30 years ago were given a drug that gave them special abilities and were now being held captive in pods so they can be experimented on by the government. Just how these children are being held captive by the government is similar to how the blind internees are being held captive in an institution by the government. Other than that, my favorite post-apocalyptic story is the movie, 2012. It's exciting to see what would happen or what people's reactions would be if the end of the world were to happen. Seeing several natural disasters happen at once gives me a rush of adrenaline and makes me wonder what I would do or how I would react if I were to be in a situation like that. I think post-apocalyptic stories have been with us for thousands of years because it brings people imagination to life. Many people think of evil things such as the end of world but never really talk about it. It also makes us think of what life would be before, during and after such a horrid event. I feel like post-apocalyptic stories talk to those who feel like real life isn't actually real life. Maybe post-apocalyptic stories are a blessing in disguise. Perhaps leading to a better life. As I continue to read the novel, I imagine that one of the soldiers would help to free the internees. Or the doctor's wife would reveal her secret to the government and use herself as a sacrifice to help the actual blind internees, as she maybe a cure to all of this chaos. I was surprised when the car thief was killed. I thought it would ironic if he were to out live everyone.

  3. Blindness is a book about the beginning of the end. It is a genre that has been a favorite of many for generations. I find it an interesting mystery as to why people love to read or watch apocalyptic fiction; the collapse of society and the people in it. I believe its because people like to escape from their reality with their imagination. They don't necessarily want the world to collapse, but would like think of being in one where they have more control. With a new world, all though out of order, one does not have to worry about problems such as mortgage, career and politics. They would instead worry of how many rounds they have left. To some, this can be an exciting change they think they need to no longer be bored in their repetitive, bureaucratic life style.
